The seed sector is pivotal in advancing agricultural development, especially for smallholder farmers who depend on high-quality seeds to grow healthy crops and boost productivity. In many African countries, the production and distribution of quality seeds are managed by accredited seed producers. However, some of these producers depend heavily on external funding, such as direct supplies of foundation seeds or subsidies for certification fees. This reliance undermines the sustainability of the seed production and delivery business, as operations often cease once external support ends. Nevertheless, numerous examples across Africa highlight the success of farmers’ organizations and cooperatives in establishing cost-effective, dynamic seed businesses that meet local demand for early-generation seeds, including foundation and certified seeds. By identifying these success stories and analyzing the key factors behind their achievements, we can support efforts to replicate these innovations in regions with similar agro-ecological conditions.
Farmer Organizations (FOs), as central actors in the agricultural value chain, possess unique insights and the potential to scale seed production models that enhance food security and increase incomes for smallholder farmers. To ensure the long-term success of these initiatives, however, FOs must adopt innovative, efficient, and resilient seed production models that strike a balance between environmental sustainability and financial profitability.
As part of AgriCord and PAFO’s 2025 webinar series aimed at fostering sustainable agricultural practices, AgriCord and PAFO are delighted to present the joint webinar.
